Education as a Path to Opportunity in Rio de Janeiro’s Favelas
Violence, poverty, and a lack of opportunities shape the daily lives of many children and young people in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Gunfire, police raids, and the loss of loved ones are part of everyday life for many families. Countless children grow up in environments that offer little stability and few prospects for the future.
Here, education means far more than learning. It provides protection, stability, and the opportunity to build a better future.
Our Partner Projects in Rio de Janeiro
Uerê – Learning Beyond Trauma
In Complexo da Maré, we support children and young people who face violence and insecurity on a daily basis. Many have experienced trauma and struggle to find their place within the traditional school system.
Through the innovative Uerê-Mello educational approach, we foster language development, creativity, and self-expression while strengthening self-confidence, emotional stability, and social skills.
Impact:
- Individual support for children with learning difficulties
- Strengthening resilience and self-confidence
- Creating new educational and career opportunities
- Providing a safe space for vulnerable children
Gamboa Ação – A Safe Place to Grow

In addition to educational activities, the project focuses on nutrition, hygiene, psychosocial support, and personal care. By combining these services, Gamboa Ação creates an environment that promotes stability, well-being, and personal development.
