Eyesight: Seeing is living

Losing sight is terrible anywhere in the world, but in a developing country it has incomparable consequences. If one parent goes blind, the “family system” collapses quickly and the care of the children is no longer guaranteed.

Since 2012, we have been committed to the cause of sight and thus form one of the most important prerequisites for self-sufficiency, security and education. Volunteer opticians and sometimes also doctors accompany us to Cambodia or Laos and carry out free screenings. In the process, around 2,000 people in rural areas are screened and eye weaknesses and diseases are identified. If the examination reveals the necessity of an eye operation in addition to glasses, we finance this in our cataract programme.

Eyesight in Detail

Glasses

Sight is important for all people, especially in such a difficult environment. Those who cannot see properly lose the ability to provide for themselves, to learn and to work.If we find out during the screenings that a patient has a visual impairment, we help them quickly and unbureaucratically with suitable farsightedness and/or reading glasses. Effective help can be that simple.

Costs: € 10,-

Sunglasses

One reason for the high number of visual impairments and the widespread cataract is the lack of eye protection. Especially in Cambodia wearing sunglasses is not the rule. The rural population in particular does not know that sunglasses protect against harmful UV rays.

We explain and distribute sunglasses free of charge.

Costs: € 5,-

Eye surgery

If a family member loses their sight, the whole family is affected. In Cambodia, the loss of a family member can be life-threatening, as there is no social welfare office or health insurance. An eye operation for mother or father is often vital, especially for the children of the family.

If we locate an operable eye disease (usually cataract – cataract), we clarify it, arrange the operation, organize the transport of the patient and one accompanying person, finance the meals for both persons for three days, provide reading glasses and sunglasses, aftercare, etc., etc.  A tragic fate has been averted.

Costs: € 60,-
